The Phnom Penh water authority has awarded VINCI Construction Grands Projets the contract to extend the drinking water treatment plant in the Bakheng district, in the north of the Cambodian capital.
This design-build contract, worth 94 million euros, calls for the construction of a new water intake in the Mekong River and a new treatment line with a capacity of 195,000 m3 per day.
The site will employ 1,600 people at peak activity. The workforce and supervisory staff, the vast majority of whom are Cambodian, will be trained in construction trades, with a target of 30% women.
From an environmental standpoint, VINCI Construction Grands Projets will :
- use concrete formulations that limit CO2 emissions by more than 30% compared with local standards;
- install 3,500 photovoltaic panels (9,000 m2) to cover 15% of the facilities' energy needs;
- deploy the Smart Users solution, an innovation developed by its subsidiary WMI, to measure and control water consumption on the site and at the facilities (including offices and the concrete plant).
Part of a government programme to provide 100% of the country's population with access to drinking water by 2030, this new project will serve 750,000 people by 2028. It will benefit from VINCI Construction Grands Projets' expertise in hydraulic infrastructure and its experience in developing access to drinking water in Cambodia. The first two phases of work on this plant - which currently supplies nearly two million people - were handed over in June 2023 and March 2024.
