Last week, a group of people from a variety of backgrounds embarked on a two-day adventure to the sacred mountain of Phnom Kulen. Organised by the Ministry of the Environment (MoE) in collaboration with the World Bank as part of the Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project (CSLEP), the aim of this familiarisation trip was to highlight the natural beauty and cultural significance of this emblematic site.
The weather was perfect, with two sunny days providing the perfect backdrop for a trip to the heart of nature. The group - made up of entrepreneurs, tourism experts, hotel owners, restaurateurs, civil servants and even World Bank employees - were enthusiastic about exploring the hidden treasures of Phnom Kulen.
The first day was spent hiking through the splendid scenery of Phnom Kulen National Park. The group ventured along the rock path and into the lush forest, marvelling at the ancient rock formations, abundant flora and waterfalls.
The first day ended with a festive evening at the Thisak Resort Cheung Phnom Kulen, a charming establishment nestling at the foot of the mountain. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter, camaraderie and the clinking of glasses. A sumptuous buffet offering a wide range of local delicacies was complemented by a generous flow of beer and gin.
As night fell, the participants retired to their tents, ready to embrace the tranquillity of a night in the wilderness.
The second day was devoted to a thrilling motorbike adventure through the ancient ruins of Mahedraparvata. The route took us to less-frequented natural and archaeological sites such as the Srah Domrei (elephant pond), the Asram Rong Chin temple, then to the Reclining Buddha of Preah Ang Thom and the Kulen waterfalls, a must-see tourist site.
As well as the magnificent scenery and historic sites, the trip strengthened the sense of community between the participants. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of the group led to deep reflections on sustainable tourism, cultural preservation and environmental conservation. These meetings also allowed participants to connect with various private sector travel agencies, rangers and other stakeholders.
What I liked most about the two-day trip:
- The festive night at the resort : It was a great opportunity to meet various tourism industry personalities in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The unlimited drinks, delicious local food and traditional music created a truly festive atmosphere.
- The motorbike adventure: The motorbike ride was an exhilarating experience, even if the roads were a little rough at times. The beautiful scenery and the thrill of the ride made it a memorable adventure.
- The impressive cliff: Standing on top of Mount Kulen and looking down into the canyon was a highlight.
Overall, the Phnom Kulen FAM trip was a success! Everyone who went had a great time and enjoyed the opportunity to see the hidden sites and learn more about Cambodia's rich history and nature. It's clear that sustainable tourism has a bright future here, and it's important to protect this heritage for future generations.
Phnom Kulen is a place that has a lot to offer, and this trip was a great way to show it to tour operators. We hope it will encourage more people to visit and discover the magic of this iconic place.
