On February 22, 2025, Siem Reap, Cambodia, hosted its annual Giant Puppet Parade, a vibrant celebration that attracted both local residents and international tourists.

Thousands of visitors gather for giant puppet parade

This event, which began at 6:30 PM, featured a procession of nine spectacular giant puppets, including representations of Hindu deities such as Garuda and Ganesha, as well as mythical creatures like the Kinnaree and Makara. The parade started at Wat Damnak and concluded at the Royal Gardens, accompanied by live music and performances that added to the festive atmosphere.

The Giant Puppet Project, which organizes this event, is a community arts initiative aimed at empowering children through creativity and self-expression. It has been running since 2007 and involves collaboration with local artists and schools.

Hundreds of children from non-governmental organizations participate in creating these puppets, which are designed to reflect Cambodia's rich cultural heritage. This year's parade was particularly special as it not only showcased artistic talent but also served to promote tourism in the region.

Oun Savann, co-director of the project, emphasized the importance of the parade in enriching Cambodia's cultural landscape and fostering a sense of community pride among participants. The event is not just a visual spectacle but also a platform for education about arts and culture.

Overall, the Giant Puppet Parade stands as a testament to Siem Reap's vibrant cultural scene and its commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists while providing an engaging experience for visitors.
