Russia plans direct flights to Cambodia to boost visitor numbers and trade between the two countries

According to the Russian ambassador to Cambodia, Anatoly Borovik, the number of Russian tourists coming to Cambodia is increasing. This statement was made during a meeting between the President of the Senate and the Russian ambassador to Cambodia in Phnom Penh on 6 June, as reported by Samdech Hun Sen on his social network account.

The Senate President asked Russia to focus on setting up direct flights between the two countries, saying it was an opportune moment to promote Russian tourist travel to Cambodia.

The ambassador also said that the number of Russian tourists in Cambodia was increasing and that Russia was considering direct flights to Cambodia in order to improve trade between the two countries.

He also pointed out that historically, many Russians travelled to Thailand, particularly to seaside destinations such as Pattaya. On the trade front, Mr Borovik acknowledged that the volume of imports and exports between the two countries remained limited.

According to the diplomat, some Russian companies are looking for partners and are working with the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and the Ministry of Commerce to invest in the country.

Samdech Hun Sen suggested that Cambodia discuss and establish an agreement with Russia to promote the export of Cambodian agricultural products to Russia, which has a strong demand for this type of product.

He also pointed out that Cambodia's neighbours, Thailand in particular, are major suppliers to Russia, exporting several billion dollars worth of agricultural products every year.

"I believe that the Royal Government of Cambodia should take the initiative to engage in a more in-depth dialogue with Russia in order to move relations towards a strategic partnership. This would strengthen relations by linking military and economic cooperation and trade between Cambodia and Russia,” he said.

Hun Sen emphasised the potential benefits of developing strategic partnerships with major world powers, including China, the United States and European countries, as well as with Russia and other key potential partners, such as Japan, South Korea and other promising countries. He stressed the importance of strengthening ties for Cambodia's economic, trade and investment interests, as well as in other areas of global cooperation.
