This evening and tomorrow evening at 6pm, artist Charles Billich and a number of other renowned artists will be auctioning off a number of works in aid of the Shanty Town Spirit association, headed by Ermine Norodom. The event, organised by the Rose Club, will take place at the Epidemick gallery in Phnom Penh.
Artist, provocateur and philanthropist, Charles Billich is known for his bold style and rockstar stature. His unique and often daring works have captivated art lovers the world over. Known for his illustrations of Greco-Roman art, Billich is a classic, but his work covers a wide range of styles, from surrealism to photo-reality. His attention to detail and the striking sense of place that his work conveys often evoke similarities with the pre-Raphaelic movement.
“We are proud to support Shanty Town Spirit, an association that helps families by providing education, hygiene and better living conditions. At this event, 5% of the proceeds from Charles Billich's art and 10% of those of others will be donated to this cause. By buying a work of art, you are not only enlarging your space, you are also contributing to the creation of a living space’”, says the artist.
In recent years, Charles Billich has turned his artistic attention to the Orient. His famous works in Xi'an, China, were inspired by the ancient terracotta warriors. These pieces, created to support Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, combine the rich history of the Orient with the modern athletic spirit. Through this fusion of old and new, Billich captures the essence of human achievement and potential, celebrating the physical and intellectual feats required to excel in sport.
Charles is truly a major artist, always on the move, seeking out new cultures and experiences to fuel his creative energy. He is also known for his courageous personality and playful use of language, always seeking to engage and entertain his audience, both through his art and his speeches.
Billich's art does not dwell on the logic of order. Instead, he focuses on the high points of life - the bustling racecourse, the imprisoned body and the festive occasion. His work is full of optimism, grandeur and beauty, seeking to elevate the everyday to an extraordinary dimension.
Charles Billich's impressive oeuvre covers many themes and genres, including surreal landscapes, glamorous cityscapes, portraits and even eroticism. Whatever the subject, his art consistently celebrates human life, history and performance. His work, like his life, reflects his belief that art has the power to transcend boundaries and inspire future generations.
The event will also feature the sale of splendid vases by Murano, Lallique, Sege Nicole and a painting by Raphaël Pinson. From France's historic glass workshops, where age-old techniques blend with modern art, to the bustling studios of Murano (Italy), renowned for their vivid colours and intricate designs, these pieces testify to a commitment to tradition and innovation.
Each vase in this collection is the result of exceptional craftsmanship, where experts transform raw materials into timeless works of art, ready to enhance any interior with their elegance and uniqueness.
