In the centre of Phnom Penh, the Boeung Keng Kang (BKK) market has for many years been a colourful and vibrant place where Khmer smiles are contagious.

Under a patchwork of makeshift awnings, vendors sell a wide variety of goods: fashion accessories, second-hand clothes and shoes, perfumes, as well as traditional staples such as meat, poultry, fruit, vegetables, sauces and herbs.

More than just a popular shopping stop, the BKK market is a colourful and authentic microcosm of the spirit of Phnom Penh's old markets. Here, the din of conversation, the rich aromas of street food and the colours of fabrics combine to create an atmosphere that is always brimming with good humour and local spirit. Amidst this chaotic charm, each stall tells a little story, reflecting the desire to maintain a traditional market style.

Despite its modest size, the market contrasts sharply with the upmarket real estate of the BKK1 district, where land prices exceed several thousand dollars per square metre. Yet its persistence underlines the duality of the district, a mix of local commerce and urban sophistication.

The BKK1 district is known for its embassies, expatriate residences and luxury apartment blocks. While the district is undergoing rapid change, the market remains a faithful supplier of basic necessities, trinkets, clothes and other useful or useless items that contribute to its charm. In this way, Boeung Keng Kang market epitomises the community spirit that reigns in a rapidly modernising district.
