Phnom Penh : New art exhibition Tree of Life by Chan Dany

The Gallerist in Phnom Penh proudly presents Chan Dany’s latest art exhibition, Tree of Life.

New art exhibition Tree of Life by Chan Dany

Chan Dany’s artistic practice demands perseverance, patient repetition and attention to detail. It is no coincidence that her work evokes the meticulous craft of traditional Khmer silk weaving. Dany knows the resource and materials inside out. His art is a synthesis of technique, culture and artisan tapestry work, creating contemporary work that employs a flexible knowledge of kbach Rachana – or Khmer decorative forms – an ancient code of organic shapes and patterns applied in different styles. We proudly present a series of intricate and precise works crafted with pencil shavings, which from a distance appear to be embroidery.

Dany considers his work a break from the painstaking effort required to make these patterns with pencil shavings. He doesn't lose himself in despair; he simply applies his intense patience and skill in a different manner.

Every artwork must transport us to an elsewhere. This is why the paintings seem limitless, without any boundaries as unchartered territories. The paintings can be seen in all directions to represent a universal world. Chan Dany’s art strikes a perfect balance between "fullness" and "form", which are the two poles of his work.

Dany’s crafts pieces are defined by their organic shapes and patterns, which he infuses with his own modern vision. His dedication to his craft and his ability to reimagine traditional forms make him a truly exceptional artist. He has made a lasting impact on the Cambodian art scene and beyond.

He seamlessly fuses the ancient with the contemporary, breathing new life into traditional materials and reconstructing them into exquisite compositions that invite audiences local and global to appreciate the beauty in both the process and the final results. Chan Dany's artistic journey is a testament to the limitless possibilities that arise when artistic traditions fuse with innovative techniques.

Dany employs a deep knowledge of the ancient Khmer decorative forms, known as kbach rachana, which is an ancient code of organic shapes and patterns applied in different styles. From a distance, Chan’s art resembles tapestry work. Upon closer viewing, his technique is revealed. His medium demands dedication and relentless repetition, reminiscent of traditional master-artisan methods of production.

Chan Dany knows exactly what he's doing when he works with organic shapes and patterns. He confidently states, "One's waste is one's creation." An art medium that transcends technique, culture and artisan tapestry work.
