The exhibition shows the determination and courage of these athletes who have overcome the difficulties associated with their physical disability. At the ASEAN Paralympic Games held in Cambodia in 2023, Cambodian athletes won 71 medals, including 9 gold, 18 silver and 44 bronze.

However, during the 5th Cambodian para-athletics championships in 2024, photographer Kofi Oduro realised that there were not many spectators and asked him to take personal portraits of the athletes.

Originally from Ghana, Kofi Oduro is a photography and art history teacher and photographer based in Phnom Penh. He served as a military nurse for four years in his home country. He found a Japanese foundation and received a small grant to take portraits of the athletes and organise an exhibition. The portraits are now on display at the Factory in Phnom Penh. They illustrate the determination and strength of the athletes who had to learn to live with physical disabilities, train up to Olympic level and take part in national and international competitions.

The exhibition aims to share with Cambodian society how para-athletes overcome their problems and change their lives through sport. The NGO Hearts of Gold, founded in 1998, has set up programmes for children who cannot be cared for by their parents, disabled people and people in need in Siem Reap province and Phnom Penh. The founder and representative director of the NGO is Yuko Arimori, a Japanese marathon runner and Olympic medallist.

The NGO Hearts of Gold has also invited Japanese Paralympic athletes or sent Cambodian Paralympic athletes to Japan to help them train. It cooperates with the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia to help strengthen Cambodian athletes. The ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ exhibition of photographs by Kofi Oduro is supported by the Cambodian National Paralympic Committee and Cloud Photo Studio. It runs until 15 February at the Factory Phnom Penh.
