News: Over 200 experts gather to discuss drafting of journalism charter

Over 200 experts in the field of journalism convened to discuss the drafting of a charter for the profession.

The Ministry of Information and its partners have assembled a group of over 200 experts and practitioners in journalism with the aim of providing input for the drafting of Cambodia's inaugural Charter for Professional Journalism.

The consultative workshop was held on 24 July in Phnom Penh, chaired by Minister of Information H.E. Neth Pheaktra.

In his opening remarks, the minister highlighted that the objective of establishing a journalism charter is to ensure the harmonisation and consistency of professional journalism ethics.

“The charter will serve as a common basis to guide professional media practice and ensure information security in Cambodia, while supporting the industry to embrace evolving technology, including artificial intelligence (AI)”, the minister said.

The minister is optimistic that the existence of the charter will also assist Cambodia in the issue of addressing fake news and misinformation and promoting public trust in the media. From there, he posited, the media can maintain its respectable role in promoting democracy and the rule of law, as well as national peace and sustainable development.

The Minister of Information has also stated that the journalistic charter represents the inaugural formal articulation of principles for journalists in Cambodia. The process of creating the charter will provide an opportunity for journalists, media outlets, civil and professional associations, and other stakeholders to actively contribute to the shaping of the future of journalism in Cambodia.

Furthermore, Pheaktra stated that the Charter for Professional Journalism will serve as a national standard of practice, guiding stakeholders to contribute to the development of democracy while upholding freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

Furthermore, the charter seeks to reinforce press freedom by enhancing the quality and capacity of professionals through the reinforcement of adherence to professional ethics.

"Upon its establishment and promulgation, the charter will enable media outlets and associations to formulate their own codes of conduct, ensuring that members adhere to national professional standards and ethical guidelines," he said.
