Although no recent cases of counterfeit US dollars have been reported, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) is reminding the public of the need to remain vigilant and help prevent the circulation of counterfeit US currency.
According to a press release issued last Thursday, the NBC's recall is in line with the recommendations of the US secret service, as the US dollar continues to circulate widely in Cambodia.
The NBC is asking banking and financial institutions to confiscate counterfeit US dollar notes from their customers without compensation and to submit them to the US Secret Service, along with reports, for further investigation.
“Banking and financial institutions must keep information on the identity of customers involved in the circulation of counterfeit US dollar notes and communicate it to the National Bank of Cambodia. The public should exercise caution and carefully inspect US dollar notes before accepting them. If counterfeit notes are suspected, members of the public are invited to report them to the National Bank of Cambodia,” the press release said.
The NBC is also encouraging all banking and financial institutions to inform their customers about the methods for identifying genuine banknotes in order to contribute to efforts to combat the use of counterfeit money.
