La Plantation, from Kampot to Siem Reap

Following the opening of its outlet in Phnom Penh and the first Pepper Mill Museum last October, La Plantation - Kampot is expanding further by opening a new shop in the provincial capital of Siem Reap.

Since this week, Siemreapois can now buy peppers, spices, sauces, aromatic plants for infusions and original blends made by La Plantation's teams, direct from the producer. Located in a traditional Khmer wooden house and carefully decorated with splendid antiques, the new boutique also offers - as in its shop on rue 155 in Phnom Penh - a museum corner with antique pepper mills from the splendid original collection.

In this fresh, green, country atmosphere, a garden adjoins a tasting area where you can try not only the original products that have made the store such a success, but also herbal teas, dried fruit, homemade ice creams, cashew nuts, not forgetting, of course, the various varieties of spices, condiments and Cambodian products.

Once again, the elegant, creative world of La Plantation is at home here, with its meticulous presentation, classy packaging in traditional tones, and those little ‘extras’ that make the shop unique and original.

A plus in this new address for pepper specialists, as Arnaud Vincent, the store manager, explains:

“We have also chosen to feature peppers from Mondolkiri province. Pepper is grown there in a mountainous region with a cooler climate, making it an ideal terroir for the cultivation of this unique, high-quality pepper”.

‘“t is characterised by intense and complex aromas, revealing subtle notes ranging from fruity to woody. Less well known than Kampot pepper, Mondulkiri pepper stands out for its powerful aromatic profile and its ability to enhance many dishes.”

As with almost all its products, La Plantation offers a wide range of recipes for using this rare condiment. According to La Plantation, Mondolkiri black pepper is particularly tasty with red meats such as beef bourguignon, white meats such as lamb tagine, or poultry prepared in recipes such as mole poblano. This pepper also excels in sweet and savoury preparations, adding a unique dimension to dishes such as ham on the bone or simmered leg of lamb.

Thanks to its natural sweetness and subtle aromatic nuances, Mondulkiri black pepper can also be used in desserts. It also adds an original touch to fromage frais, adds a delicate depth to chocolate and goes wonderfully well with red or exotic fruit, adding a surprisingly refined spicy note.

In a previous interview, Guy and Nathalie Chaboche had already mentioned their wish to extend their network of shops, after Kampot and Phnom Penh, and now they have done so with this new outlet, which should undoubtedly delight Siem Reap's gourmets and lovers of culinary originality.
