Institut français du Cambodge & Cultural Season 4 : “On the Spot”

The French Institute of Cambodia is pleased to invite you to discover its new cultural season entitled "On the Spot", which will be held from September 26th, 2024 to January 15th, 2025! This season highlights the art of photography, where each image tells a story, capturing fleeting moments and revealing deep emotions.

nouvelle saison culturelle intitulée "Sur le vif", qui se tient depuis le 26 septembre 2024 jusqu'au au 15 janvier 2025

It will host two highlights in its exhibition gallery:

from September 26th to November 9th, 2024, a retrospective of the works of Cambodian photographer Mak Remissa

A Cambodian photographer born in Phnom Penh in 1970, Mak Remissa is recognised as one of the most remarkable photographers of his generation. An emblematic figure in the revival of photography and the image after the Khmer Rouge genocide, his vision is essential: he bears witness through his photographs while reconciling people with the world and their memories. Resilience and creation merge in a humanist, committed photography. In addition to his work as a photojournalist, Mak Remissa is developing a unique artistic project that fuses drawing and photography.

This exhibition pays tribute to him, and presents five series produced over the course of his career:

  • L'eau, c'est la vie (Water is Life), 2009

  • Flamed Forest, 2012

  • Left 3 Days, 2014

  • Fish and Ants, 2005

  • From Hunting to Shooting, 2018

Through his visual creations and photographs, Mak Remissa sets out his vision of environmental issues and reveals the fragile balance between natural and social elements. He also works on the memory of the tragic genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge. This exhibition, entitled ‘The Voice of Images’, will feature photographs from five series produced over the course of his career.

From 21 November 2024 to 15 January 2025, a selection of photographs retracing the fifteen-year history of the Photo Phnom Penh festival

As part of the Photo Phnom Penh festival, following Mak Remissa's exhibition, the IFC gallery will host a selection of photographs retracing the festival's fifteen-year history. The aim of the exhibition is to encourage exchanges between European and Asian artists. Sixty photographers who have already exhibited at the festival have been asked to send a photograph that has never been shown before in Cambodia. These artists come mainly from Europe and Asia. This retrospective will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of photography and its impact in Cambodia.

Simultaneously with this exhibition, the works of Ourng Sam Ang will be highlighted on the wall of the IFC media library. This artist captures the beauty and complexity of the world through landscape photography. A representative of the young Cambodian photography scene, he offers a unique and innovative perspective on the country's natural heritage treasures.

‘Sur le vif’ is an ideal opportunity to discover and appreciate the art of photography in all its forms. Through these exhibitions, the public is invited to explore the wealth of photographic know-how.

Whether immortalising an intimate portrait, exploring awe-inspiring landscapes or documenting authentic moments, photography reveals the beauty and complexity of the world around us. Photographs open up countless creative possibilities, offering a dynamic platform for personal or collective expression.

The IFC looks forward to welcoming you all to celebrate creativity and visual expression at the Institut and at all the festival venues.
