Students in Cambodia's Kep province are embracing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education with enthusiasm, thanks to the transformative support of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Second Upper Secondary Education Sector Development Program (USESDP-2), funded by ADB and the Cambodian government, has significantly boosted resources and opportunities for students at Hun Sen Chamkar Doung High School.
The school now boasts a state-of-the-art resource building equipped with a library, computer lab, and science laboratory. Costing approximately $350,000, the facility enables hands-on learning in subjects like physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science.
"In the past, students were afraid of science subjects, but not anymore," said Seng Chamnab, a mathematics teacher. "Now they love it and come to study to prepare for their future."
The impact of this initiative is evident in student achievements. Learners from the school have excelled in national STEM competitions, ranking between first and third place. Grade 12 student Nen Chan Alex expressed gratitude for the program: "It helps me strengthen my abilities and pursue my dream of becoming an architect."
The USESDP-2 program also focuses on teacher training and capacity building. Over 775 STEM teachers and 25 master lecturers have received professional development to enhance their teaching methods. School leaders are also benefiting from training in leadership and instructional supervision.
ADB President Masato Kanda emphasized the broader significance of such efforts during a recent visit to Kep. He noted that improving classrooms, laboratories, and teacher training lays a strong foundation for Cambodia's youth to engage with science and technology. The program aligns with Cambodia’s vision of transforming into a technology-driven economy by addressing critical STEM skill gaps.
With $53.5 million in funding—comprising ADB loans, grants, and Cambodian government contributions—the USESDP-2 has been pivotal in fostering a culture of innovation and practical learning in Cambodia's education system. As the program nears its conclusion in June 2025, its success in Kep serves as a model for nationwide educational reform.
