The Kampot province salt production has reached over 90,000 tonnes so far this year, an increase of more than 10,000 tonnes compared to the entirety of 2023, due to favourable weather conditions.
1,474 individuals, organised into 171 groups across six centres, are involved in the production of the salt. The total output for the entire year of 2024 is projected to reach 93,906 tonnes, ensuring a sufficient supply for the country. However, harvesting is significantly impacted by natural factors.
In 2023, the province's salt production reached 78,484 tonnes. The harvesting period runs from the end of December to mid-May each year. Assuming favourable weather conditions, the yield per hectare is typically around 20 tonnes per year.
The country requires an annual output of between 70,000 and 100,000 tonnes to meet domestic demand. In addition to the local supply, provinces bordering Thailand and Vietnam import salt for sale, according to the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.
