The French Embassy in Phnom Penh welcomed more than 7500 visitors in its magnificent park to the public last saturday, coinciding with the European Heritage Days - Journées du Parimoine celebrations.
This year's theme, “Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections”, provides an apt backdrop for the opening of this notable green space. Spanning 4.7 hectares, the park represents a significant green space within Phnom Penh. It boasts a remarkable biodiversity, with over 200 tree species and approximately 30 animal species.
Since its inception in 1984, the European Heritage Days initiative has consistently demonstrated its commitment to facilitating access to a vast array of historically and culturally significant sites, many of which are typically inaccessible to the general public.
The initiative involves opening doors that are typically closed to the public, exploring unusual locations, gaining access to areas that are not usually visible, and investing in sites that are typically off-limits. These include civil or religious monuments, art and performance buildings, exceptional residences, power enclaves, institutional buildings, and industrial infrastructures.
The event was originally conceived in France as "Open House Day in Historical Monuments." It has since expanded to encompass 50 countries.
