France & Cambodia : Volunteers in the spotlight, a successful Volunteer Day

This Friday, October 11th, the French Institute of Cambodia vibrated to the rhythms of solidarity and Francophonie during an exceptional day dedicated to volunteering.

Organized by France Volontaires, the 11th edition of French Volunteer Day in Cambodia brought together a large and enthusiastic audience, demonstrating the growing interest in civic engagement and international cooperation. This year, the event highlighted Francophonie and paid tribute to the commitment of French and Cambodian volunteers to Francophone collaboration.

This initiative is particularly important considering recent events that have marked relations between the two countries. The participation of King Norodom Sihamoni at the 19th Francophonie Summit in Villers-Cotterêts and Paris on October 4th and 5th, 2024, was the occasion for a major announcement: Cambodia will host the Francophonie Summit in 2026. This decision, formalized during his meeting with President Emmanuel Macron, marks a new chapter in Franco-Cambodian cooperation.

From the morning, the doors opened onto a festive space where the stands were brimming with information and fun activities. The public was able to discover the many volunteering opportunities offered both nationally and internationally, and to interact with committed actors in the field. Among the many stands present were schools such as the French International School (EFI) and the Paul Dubrule School of Tourism and Hospitality, based in Siem Reap. Major organizations like France Volontaires, Campus France, and the GUILDE were also present. Lesser-known but equally committed associations, such as Taramana, l'Irrésistible, The Green Farmers, Kep Children, and AEC-Foyer Lataste, also participated.

Among all these structures, one association particularly touched me: "Au-delà des rizières" (Beyond the Rice Fields), founded by the young Aurélie GAYOD at only 21 years old. This socio-educational center, entirely run by French volunteers, welcomes children from the village of O'Krassar, in the province of Kep. It offers an environment conducive to their development, with recreational activities, English classes, film screenings, and awareness-raising about health and environmental issues.

The afternoon was marked by a rich program of activities. Spectators were transported by graceful Cambodian folk dances before participating in various activities offered by the event partners, including a 100% Francophone music quiz! Joe Dassin, Aya Nakamura, Christophe Maé, and Charles Aznavour were honored... Something to bring together all generations.

The inauguration of the photo exhibition retracing the journeys of Cambodian and French volunteers was a highlight of the evening. This exhibition showcased the positive impact of volunteering on individuals and communities.

The cocktail that followed allowed participants to continue the discussions in a festive atmosphere. The lucky draw added a note of suspense and rewarded a few lucky winners.

The video contest awards ceremony brought this evening to a beautiful close, to the applause of the audience. The association "Au-delà des rizières" won the second prize!

Beyond the figures, it was above all the warm and friendly atmosphere that marked this day. The smiles, exchanges, and sharing testified to the success of this event.
