France Cambodge & In Pictures: Gastronomy, sports and hopes for the French National day

Last Friday, the French Embassy had the honour of hosting the 2024 National Day celebrations, with the invaluable assistance of French companies who were keen to offer the best specialities to satisfy the guests. The guests were pleased to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister, HUN Manit, several French-speaking ministers and numerous secretaries of state.

The French Ambassador in Phnom Penh, Jacques Pellet, extended a warm welcome to all his guests. The ceremony was an opportunity for Jacques Pellet to reiterate once again the sacred bond between our two countries. He also made a point of mentioning the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which start in just a few days' time!

In his remarks, Mr. Hun Manit recalled the historic role played by France, which welcomed Prince Norodom Sihanouk during the challenging period of peace negotiations. He also acknowledged the contributions of Minister Roland Dumas in the signing of the 1991 Paris Agreements.

In the context of gastronomy, with the impressive array of quality options available at the various restaurants, one of the guests offered the following observation:

“ The reception at the Embassy was everything I'd hoped it would be: festive, relaxed and friendly. With just over 40 stands in the garden, we didn't know which way to turn: between the melting cheeses from Khema, the foie gras from the Sofitel, the 'blue, white and red' macaroons from the Raffles, the refreshing cocktails from Cellier d'Asie, the 100% local rum from Ampov Distillerie, the red wine from Monsieur Wine & Beyond, and the gourmet ice creams from Lyly Cream... It was hard to resist!”

“The warm atmosphere was accompanied throughout by French music, from the group Indochine to the rapper Naps... There was something for every generation and every taste.”

As well as celebrating France National Day, this cocktail party was an opportunity for many French expatriates to feast with friends and colleagues before they go on holiday for the summer, before returning in September.
