The Australian Foreign Minister, H.E. Mrs. Penny Wong, has announced the appointment of H.E. Derek Yip as the new Ambassador of Australia to Cambodia, replacing H.E. Justin Whyatt.
The Australian Embassy has announced the appointment of Mr. Derek Yip as the country’s next Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Australia has a long-standing relationship with Cambodia, an important regional partner and valued member of ASEAN. Australia reaffirmed its commitment to working with Cambodia to support ASEAN’s vital contribution to peace, prosperity and security in the region.
Cambodia is experiencing rapid economic growth, making it one of the fastest-growing economies in the region. The Australian government is committed to strengthening Australia’s trade and investment links with Cambodia. The media release confirmed the implementation of Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.
"Our relationship is underpinned by strong people-to-people ties. "Australia is home to more than 57,000 people of Cambodian heritage," stated H.E. Mrs. Penny Wong.
H.E. Derek Yip is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, most recently serving as Assistant Secretary of the East Asia Political Branch. He has previously served overseas on two postings to China.
"I would like to thank former Ambassador Justin Whyatt for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Cambodia," concluded the Australian Foreign Minister.
Australia and Cambodia collaborate closely on a number of key areas, including the promotion of inclusive and sustainable development, with a focus on health, infrastructure and agriculture. Furthermore, they work together on crucial matters such as peacekeeping and combating transnational crime.
