Cooperation: The European Union recognised for its contribution to Cambodia's development

H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, expressed his deep gratitude for the significant contribution made by the European Union (EU) to Cambodia's development.

The Cambodian diplomat expressed this recognition during a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Igor Driesmans, at the Ministry on 2 January, as indicated in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to the Ministry, during the meeting, Ambassador Driesmans underlined the EU's commitment to continue supporting Cambodia's socio-economic progress through technical assistance and capacity building programmes to address key challenges such as poverty reduction, healthcare, education and climate change, while promoting a more inclusive and prosperous society.

H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister congratulated Ambassador Driesmans for his dedication to strengthening bilateral relations between Cambodia and the European Union, particularly through his active engagement with various Cambodian institutions. He expressed Cambodia's sincere gratitude to the EU for aligning its joint European development cooperation strategy with the priorities set out in Phase I of Cambodia's pentagonal strategy, which aims to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth and turn the country into a high-income country by 2050.

With regard to political relations, both sides stressed the importance of maintaining the high level of engagement between the leaders of Cambodia and the EU, as has been the case in recent years. These commitments have made it possible to strengthen the partnership based on mutual benefits, understanding and respect.

With regard to strengthening democracy and the rule of law, H.E. Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia's firm commitment to upholding the rule of law as defined by the Cambodian Constitution and the laws in force, with the aim of strengthening the democratic space in the best interests of the Cambodian people.
