Cambodia & Transport: Dara Sakor airport begins technical flight control tests

Dara Sakor International Airport, located in Koh Kong province, conducted a two-day flight engineering inspection and calibration test on 29 and 30 September 2024, in preparation for domestic flights scheduled for the end of next month.

Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the Secretariat of State for Civil Aviation (SSCA) and representative of Dara Sakor International Airport (Union Development Group investment group), was present to witness the tests at the airport.

The test was carried out for flight controls, air navigation equipment, radio communication with pilots and other technical aspects, said State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCA) spokesman Sinn Chanserey Vutha.

“If nothing changes, domestic small light aircraft rotations at Dara Sakor International Airport could take place by the end of November, currently the airport is about 100% built and is technically ready to handle domestic flights,” Vutha told local media.

According to the spokesman, the airport is being built on 218 hectares and nearly 1,000 hectares are earmarked for the development of various support projects. The airport is capable of handling 4E aircraft, from small to medium jets. The international airport is located in the Botum Sakor district of Koh Kong. China's Union Development Group provided the initial investment of $200 million for the first phase, and the facility will be operated by Coastal Airport Investment.

According to the SSCA, this investment supports the multi-purpose tourism sector. It was originally scheduled to open in 2022, but the project has been delayed due to various crises, including Covid-19, which have led to a drop in demand.
