The architectural heritage of Phnom Penh has taken a ‘modern turn’ with the transformation of the historic house of Vann Molyvann into a Brown Coffee space.

The residence, which once belonged to Cambodia's most famous architect, is now an unusual blend of historical preservation and contemporary design, offering visitors an immersive experience that honours Molyvann's legacy.
The renovation has preserved the elegant features of the original structure while incorporating modern elements that complement its historical significance.
Visitors can enjoy a coffee in a space that reflects Molyvann's profound influence on Cambodian architecture, with exhibitions on the upper floor showcasing his contributions until June. Large bay windows overlooking a garden add to the charm of the place, creating a serene atmosphere.

This development follows similar trends in Cambodia, such as the conversion of the historic Art Deco Kampot fish market into a Starbucks. Although such transformations spark debate about cultural preservation versus modernisation, many agree that adaptive reuse is preferable to the total loss of these monuments.
