Cambodia's international trade volume reached more than US$36.48 billion in the first eight months of 2024, up 16.5% from US$31.32 billion in the same period last year, the General Department of Customs and Excise report said.
From January to August this year, Cambodia's total exports amounted to 17.58 billion dollars, an increase of 16.7% year-on-year, while its total imports were valued at 18.9 billion dollars, an increase of 16.2%.
China remained Cambodia's largest trading partner during this period, followed by the United States, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan.
“Cambodia's free trade agreements with China and Korea and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) have contributed to the increase in trade,” says Secretary of State and Ministry of Commerce spokesperson H.E. Penn Sovicheat.
“The RCEP and the free trade agreement between Cambodia and China have given a significant boost to trade growth,” he said.
Cambodia's main exports include clothing, machinery, electrical equipment, footwear, leather goods, cereals, furniture, rubber, fruit, vegetables, pearls, toys and textiles. Its main imports are medicines and food supplements, consumer goods, food and beverages.
The clothing, footwear and travel goods industry is Cambodia's main source of foreign currency. There are around 1,300 factories in the sector, employing some 850,000 workers, mainly women.
