Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that the Royal Government had approved 23 projects to develop new energy sources with a total capacity of 5,950 MW, the majority of which are clean energy sources.
The Prime Minister was speaking last Thursday at the closing of the annual meeting of the Ministry of Mines and Energy at the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
“At the recent cabinet meeting, the Royal Government approved 23 energy development projects with a total capacity of 5,950 MW. Currently, 62% of our energy comes from clean sources, and we aim to increase this figure to 70% by 2030.”
“Among the ASEAN countries, Cambodia ranks second in the use of clean energy, with Laos leading the way thanks to its abundant hydroelectric resources. By 2023, our energy mix will include solar energy, hydropower, biomass and other energy sources to ensure sustainability, stability and affordability,” the Prime Minister emphasised.
The Prime Minister also noted that for these electricity investment projects, the Royal Government had negotiated with investors to guarantee low-cost energy production, enabling electricity to be supplied to citizens at affordable prices.
At the weekly cabinet meeting on 27 September 2024, the Royal Government approved 23 investment projects in the electricity sector: 12 solar power projects, 6 wind power projects, 1 biomass combined with solar power project, 1 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, 1 hydropower project and 2 storage station projects.
Of the 23 projects, 21 are power station development projects with a combined capacity of 3,950 MW, while the other two are electricity storage projects with a total capacity of 2,000 MW.
