Cambodia: Ministry of Health issues advisory on recent increase of cases of COVID-19

The Ministry of Health states that it would like to inform the people that through the influenza surveillance system and the acute respiratory tract surveillance system in the Kingdom of Cambodia, there was an increase in influenza and COVID-19 during May and early June 2024. This coincides with the increase in these diseases in many countries in the Western Asia-Pacific region and our neighbouring countries.

A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was conducted by the National Institutes of Public Health to identify virus types and subgroups. This test revealed the presence of a specific subgroup of mutations in the Variant of Interest (VOI) group, which has been designated as a Variant of Concern (VOC) due to its potential to cause severe illness.

However, it is not the Variant of Concern (VOC) that will result in an increased number of hospitalisations.

Consequently, the Ministry of Health urges all citizens to prioritise their personal and familial health in order to prevent the widespread transmission of influenza and COVID-19.

It is recommended that the following precautionary measures be taken:

It is recommended that individuals adhere to basic hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitisers.

When coughing or sneezing, it is advisable to cover the mouth with a mask or handkerchief or elbow pads, and to refrain from spitting in the open.

It is advisable to avoid travelling to urban areas or undertaking journeys if one is experiencing symptoms such as a fever, cough or shortness of breath, or if one is suffering from an underlying health condition. In such instances, it is essential to seek appropriate medical attention.

It is recommended that individuals continue to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in full, both at the local level and at the hospital or health centre, in order to strengthen the immune system and prevent infection.

Should one experience symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, runny nose or shortness of breath, it is advisable to seek advice at a health centre or hospital in a timely manner. Alternatively, one may contact the 115 helpline for advice and consultation.

In the event that the test is positive, it is recommended that the individual infected with the virus be isolated from their family members until they no longer exhibit symptoms.
