The Ministry of Health has reported that the Kingdom of Cambodia experienced a significant decline in the number of dengue fever cases, with a total of 18,987 cases recorded in 2024.
Dr. Leang Rithea, Director of the National Dengue Control Programme and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, attributes this success to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in preventing the spread of this deadly disease. He emphasises the importance of prompt identification and treatment, advising parents to seek medical attention at health centres or hospitals within 48 hours if they suspect their children are infected with the dengue virus.
Dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, predominantly affects tropical and sub-tropical regions, and is characterised by symptoms including high fever, nausea, rashes, backache and headaches. The haemorrhagic variant, which is often fatal due to severe internal bleeding resulting from blood vessel collapse, is of particular concern.
