Cambodia & Fisheries : It's prahok season

The Fisheries Administration is reminding the public that the best time of the year for fishing is now open, especially for those planning to prepare prahok - the traditional fermented fish paste whose culinary status is emblematic in the Kingdom.

According to the Fisheries Administration, the yield from commercial stationary trawl fishing, known locally as ‘dai’, should be abundant along the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh and the neighbouring province of Kandal.

The abundance of fish stocks is due in particular to their migration from various lakes, streams and creeks to the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac tributaries. However, this abundance depends on clear skies and the absence of rain or thunderstorms.

The FiA, which reports to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, is urging those planning to make prahok - the ubiquitous pungent-smelling fermented fish paste used in a wide variety of local dishes - smoked fish or fish sauce for consumption to buy fish during this December period. It is also calling on local authorities to facilitate the movement, storage and transport of fish during the period of plenty.

The province's richest fishing grounds can be found along the 24 fishing corridors in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province. Those interested in buying fish for prahok are advised to visit these areas.

The abundance of fish is expected to continue until 25 December, coinciding with the 13th day of the crescent moon. The fish will then travel up the Mekong to the Muk Kampoul and Khsach Kandal districts of Kandal and the provinces of Kampong Cham, Kratie and Stung Treng.

There are 15 fishing lanes in the capital and the catches are mainly made up ofriel fish (Henicorhynchus entmema), which are suitable for prahok.
