As part of their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have agreed to increase the frequency of direct flights between Phnom Penh and Manila and introduce new air routes linking key tourist destinations in both countries. These new routes will include direct connections between Siem Reap and Cebu, as well as Phnom Penh and Cebu.

Delegate Minister So Naro made the announcement during a press conference on Tuesday, February 11, where he detailed the outcomes of Samdech Thipadei’s official visit to the Philippines. He emphasized that the discussions between Prime Minister Hun Manet and President Marcos Jr. encompassed a wide range of cooperative initiatives, spanning trade, investment, business, agriculture, health, culture, education, vocational training, technology, national defense, and security. The leaders also underscored the importance of fostering closer people-to-people ties between Cambodia and the Philippines.

A key focus of their dialogue was the tourism sector, which both leaders identified as a crucial driver of economic growth and cultural exchange. Recognizing the demand for improved air connectivity, they pledged to support the expansion of direct flights between Phnom Penh and Manila, which currently operate five times per week. By increasing flight frequency and introducing new routes, both governments aim to facilitate easier and more efficient travel, ultimately enhancing tourism, trade, and business opportunities.

The addition of direct flights linking Siem Reap and Cebu, as well as Phnom Penh and Cebu, is expected to significantly benefit both countries' tourism industries. Siem Reap, home to the world-renowned Angkor Wat, is a major attraction for international tourists, while Cebu serves as a vibrant cultural and economic hub in the Philippines. Strengthening air connectivity between these destinations will allow for greater accessibility, encouraging more travelers to explore both nations and contribute to their growing tourism sectors.

So Naro further highlighted the broader economic implications of these enhanced air links. By reducing travel barriers, the increase in direct flights will not only promote tourism but also support business collaborations and investment opportunities between Cambodia and the Philippines. The easier movement of people and goods will encourage trade partnerships, benefiting industries such as hospitality, retail, and aviation.

According to recent statistics, Cambodia welcomed approximately 6.7 million international tourists in 2024, with 2,396,937 arriving through the country’s three international airports. Among these visitors, nearly 70,000 were Filipino tourists, underscoring the potential for further growth in travel between the two nations.

With the planned expansion of direct air routes, both countries anticipate a significant rise in tourist arrivals, reinforcing their commitment to regional integration and economic development.

As Cambodia and the Philippines continue to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, the introduction of these new air routes marks a strategic step toward greater connectivity, mutual prosperity, and enhanced cooperation in the ASEAN region.
