We had already tried out some of the small hotels and guesthouses located upstream from the Praek Tuek Chhu river. While on the whole they are very pleasant, Sabay Beach tries to set itself apart by offering a green and responsible stay, not forgetting an absolutely magnificent green setting.
Sabay Beach Resort is located on the beachfront, about 20 minutes by tuktuk from Kampot city centre. The resort is nestled in a densely wooded area with superb views of the river and Bokor National Park.
Nine rooms are available, two of which are located by the river and the other seven in the garden of mango trees, bamboo and multiplying palms. Particular care has been taken in the design of the bungalows, some of which are wooden cabins nestling in the trees, designed by a French architect and offering a relaxing area with breathtaking views.
Some rooms are hard-standing and built on one level, others are wooden and equipped with a fan. All have a large double bed and a private bathroom with hot water.
Accessible by crossing a wooden bridge, the hotel's restaurant and reception are of the same inspiration, made of wood and bamboo, with relaxation areas offering this beautiful view of the river.
The restaurant is adjacent to a private beach that children will love, and there is also a floating landing stage where you can take a leisurely stroll along the river.
The hotel's restaurant serves fusion cuisine, with some dishes created by French chefs, but the classics of Khmer cuisine are not forgotten. The food is absolutely delicious and the service very pleasant, with friendly staff who take great care of you.
The bar serves fresh fruit juices, local beers, spirits and cocktails, as well as a fine selection of French and international wines. A special mention goes to the rather original decor, including a surprising bookcase.
Sabay Beach Resort is located upstream from many guest houses and the town of Kampot, so swimming is possible in water that is clean and virtually free of plastic waste. The hotel has introduced a number of initiatives to combat the scourge of household pollution, which can spoil a stay in such a magnificent place.
Some of the sustainability initiatives taken at Sabay Beach include: no plastic straws or stirrers, stainless steel straws are available, glass drinking water bottles in every room and refillable aluminium containers for shampoo, soap, hand gel and hand sanitizer.
The hotel also states that no trees were cut down during construction, with over 200 plants and trees on the property.
The property also supports a number of local community projects, with more than 40 wells built for the surrounding villages since 2019.
A wide range of activities are available during your stay. These can be booked directly with reception. Some classics include a visit to Bokor National Park, Phnom Sor Hill, pepper plantations, the Night Market, the Samaki Market, the Kep crab market and many more.
The Sabay Beach team can also arrange Tuktuks to and from Kampot town (20 min drive) or taxis to and from Phnom Penh airport (3 hours drive).
Open since 2017, Sabay Beach has become a must-visit destination for its service, exceptional views and greenery and is certainly among the best places to stay riverside in Kampot. All at very reasonable prices.
