Sophy Odom, a leading figure in the promotion of Cambodian culture and the empowerment of women, has been appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the 14th Cambodia International Film Festival.

Sophy Odom aims to underline her commitment to sharing the Kingdom's beauty and culture with the world and to supporting the resilience of Cambodian women. Speaking at the opening ceremony last Friday, the ambassador said:
‘Stories have the power to inspire, educate and transform lives. Through film, we share our heritage, our struggles and our triumphs with the world. The festival is a platform that amplifies voices, celebrates culture and connects the entire continent to the global stage, including Australia, which is so close to my heart.’
‘From a refugee camp to Australia, my journey has been one of resilience and reinvention. As a mother of six and a passionate entrepreneur, I've learned that every challenge is an opportunity to build a better future. I'm incredibly proud to be part of a movement that fosters understanding through the power of film. Together, let's continue to elevate Cambodian cinema, empower our talented filmmakers and bring the compelling stories of our nation to audiences around the world. Beyond my dedication to this remarkable film festival, I am passionately motivated to contribute to causes that elevate and honour both Cambodian heritage and the strength of women.’
Voting for a worthy cause
Sophy Odom then announced two important projects: ‘Firstly, I am honoured to announce that I will be representing Australia in the Ms. Global 2025 competition. This platform offers a unique opportunity to highlight the beauty and resilience of Cambodian culture and to share the inspiring stories of Cambodian women. I sincerely invite you to join me on this journey by casting your vote.’

‘Every vote will directly support the Women in Need Foundation, which provides essential resources and support to women facing adversity. By voting, you will be helping to make a tangible and positive difference to the lives of those who need it
Memorial
‘More importantly, this year is a very special occasion as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh to the Khmer Rouge. That's why I'm currently trying to raise funds to build the first Cambodian genocide memorial outside Cambodia.
‘This memorial will serve as a sacred space for remembrance and reflection, and will serve to educate future generations, ensuring that the horrors of the past are never repeated.’
‘I would like to invite you to take part in this crucial undertaking. Your contributions, no matter how small, will help us create a lasting legacy of remembrance and hope. As we stand here tonight, celebrating the power of film and art, I am filled with optimism for the future. We have shown the world, through our resilience and creativity, what we are capable of. We have overcome unimaginable challenges and we continue to rise, create and inspire,’ she added, before thanking the organisers and the CIFF team for their warm welcome.
