In the heart of Siem Reap province, the residents of Bangkong village celebrated a centuries-old tradition this week, gathering at dawn on February 9 for their annual communal fish harvest—a vibrant prelude to the sacred Leung Meak ceremony.
Nestled within Prasat Bakong district’s Ampil commune, the community converged at an ancient, carefully conserved pond, where the waters teem with life safeguarded year-round for this singular event.
Clad in traditional attire and armed only with time-honored fishing tools, villagers waded into the pond, their laughter and camaraderie echoing a practice rooted in agrarian rhythms. The harvest, timed meticulously after the rice season, symbolizes both gratitude for the land’s bounty and unity among generations. Fish caught during the ritual are first offered to ancestors in the Leung Meak spiritual rites, with remaining shares distributed among households—a tangible thread connecting daily sustenance to cultural reverence.
