Known for his mastery of rusted metal as a medium, the artist immortalises the essence of urban life and Cambodia's cultural heritage through raw, textured compositions.

The streets tell a story

Since 2007, Phnom Penh-based artist M. Vallier has established himself as a leading figure in Cambodia's street art movement. His artistic approach revolves around a fusion of Khmer mythology and a resolutely bold urban aesthetic, as part of a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional codes and representations. His works depict scenes from everyday life, such as bustling markets, tuk-tuks threading their way through electric cables and the quiet resistance of street vendors, and are engraved on rusty metal, a material that is both refractory and evanescent.

The artist uses silkscreen and oxidation techniques to transform industrial surfaces into living canvases. On these canvases, layers of corrosion, paint and light interact to create depth and movement. His art captures the soul of the streets of Cambodia, a country in the throes of change, and celebrates the beauty and ruggedness of its urban landscape.

“Art has the power to preserve memory while embracing transformation. Théo Vallier's Rust n‘ Streets is a tribute to Cambodia's rich cultural identity, blending tradition with the raw energy of modern life”

“His work is in keeping with the philosophy of Sofitel, where heritage and contemporary creativity converge. We are honoured to present this exceptional exhibition,” said Charles-Henri Chevet, Charles-Henri Chevet, Area General Manager, Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.

This 31st exceptional exhibition is part of the hotel's commitment to supporting artistic dialogue in Cambodia. Rust n'Streets invites visitors to discover Phnom Penh from a new angle, marked by rust, history and movement.

Artistic journey

Théo Vallier's creative journey has its origins in Marseille's street art scene, but it was in Cambodia that the artist found the decisive impetus for his work. There, he fused the mythology of his host country with modern urban aesthetics, creating a unique artistic language that has captured the attention of both local audiences and foreign art lovers. His multidisciplinary approach, which includes graphic design, street art and screen printing, means that his artistic vision is constantly evolving.

Innovative techniques

One of Vallier's most notable contributions to the art world is his innovative use of rusted metal as a medium of expression. He identified the aesthetic potential of rust by observing how it altered the texture and colour of graffiti on metal surfaces.

This led him to develop a three-stage technique, including soaking in water, painting and varnishing, which enables the creation of highly complex works of art. These works combine the organic process of rust with deliberate design elements, marking a harmonious fusion between art and material.

Promoting Khmer culture

Théo Vallier is not just an artist, but also a cultural ambassador. He co-founded the Cambodia Urban Art Festival in 2015, with the aim of promoting urban art in Cambodia and showcasing Khmer culture on the international stage. His commitment has helped to reduce cultural disparities and foster greater understanding and appreciation of Cambodian heritage around the world.
