In the early 2000s, as Phare Ponleu Selpak sought to create a space for Cambodian children to learn and develop through the arts, the French Embassy in Cambodia became a key partner.
The Embassy's contributions began with essential support for the construction of Phare's high school, secondary school, circus school and artists' residency - venues that have since become essential to our creative community. With additional funding for teachers' salaries, the Embassy has enabled us to support and maintain our teaching staff, giving our students the opportunity to learn from passionate and skilled mentors.
The commitment of the French Embassy has grown stronger over the course of this collaboration.
In partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Embassy introduced the FSP project (the Front Solidaire programme), providing training in technical production skills and preparing students for professional performances.
With extra help with visa procedures, the artists were able to perform abroad and share Cambodian culture with audiences around the world. In addition to the embassy, the Institut français du Cambodge also played a key role in supporting this mission. By helping to organise cultural events and performances, the French Institute has provided a platform for Phare artists to showcase their work and connect with their audiences.
‘We look forward to continuing this journey with these valued partners, supporting new generations of Cambodian artists and providing them with the means to flourish,’ says the Phare press release.
Today, Phare is deeply grateful for this partnership. The vision and generosity of the French Embassy, as well as the French Institute's commitment to cultural exchange, have been essential to the development and success of Phare.
